With 70% of Austria’s vineyards planted with white grape varietals, it is no wonder that Austrian wines have become synonymous with dry to sweet whites. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are just a few of the varietals that thrive in Austria’s cool climate. The Alps, foggy valleys, rolling hillsides, rocky soil – Austria is a variable landscape suited to more than 30 “approved” varieties. Producers like Hirtzberger, Schloss Gobelsburg and Bründlmayer make excellent dry examples, while delicious German-style sweet wines - Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein – come from Alois Kracher and Willi Opitz.
