Russian River Valley
Within Sonoma County, there lies a valley with an incredibly rich history. The Russian River Valley derives its name from Russian settlers who moved to northern Sonoma Valley around 1812 to hunt sea otters for furs, as well as develop an agricultural foothold in order to send supplies to additional Russian settlers in Alaska. It did not take long for viticulture to follow, with vineyards being well established by the 1870's -- when The Santa Rosa Wine Company was opened for business -- making this valley one of the oldest wine producing regions in California. The region took a major hit in production during Prohibition, and many vineyards closed their doors and tore up their vines until the region saw a resurgence in growth in the 1960's.
Russian River Valley achieved American Viticultural Area status in 1983, and was enlarged in 2005. The region benefits from a cooler climate than most of Sonoma, and produces stellar, terroir driven wines with bright, focused fruit and a beautiful, silken texture. Russian River Valley's claim to fame lies with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, although some producers are seeing success with Syrah, Zinfandel, and Gewurtztraminer.View all our items from Russian River Valley
