Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Tor Kenward, the long-time PR rep for the Beringer empire, has his own project for a number of years and he continues to build an impressive portfolio of fascinating wines that reflect his love of Napa Valley and his own personal preference for complex wines. Incidentally, he has one of the great wine collections of Napa and he is one of those true connoisseurs who is happy to share his best bottles. While production levels for the wines in this portfolio are relatively small, all of them are top-notch, interesting efforts. Tasting through three vintages of Tor’s Cabernet Sauvignons left me with the impression that this winery continues to go from strength to strength. Despite the issues of valley floor vineyards, Tor has done well in 2011. He told me that the rot that afflicted many valley floor vineyards was very site specific, and the only way to ensure clean, pure wines was low yields, open canopies, culling out affected bunches or berries, and Draconian-like sorting procedures. It appears he has done all of that given the success of his 2011s, which, with the exception of the Cimarossa, are low elevation vineyards. I also tasted five barrel samples from 2012, a large, easy vintage with no problems of any serious consequence.

Another magnificent offering is the 2012 Syrah La Herradura, which comes from a Conn Valley hillside vineyard. This spectacular Syrah displays notes of burning embers, charcoal, pepper, charcuterie, tapenade and copious quantities of blackberries and chocolate. Full-bodied and opulent, this head-turning beauty should drink well for a decade. Drink: 2013 - 2023.

From the hillsides of Conn Valley, the 2012 Syrah La Herradura exhibits lots of lavender, blackberry, roasted meat and bouquet garni characteristics. Full-bodied, rich, earthy, peppery and spicy, it should drink well for 7-8 years.

Winery Notes
Winery Notes:
The nose on this 2012 Allan just explodes with sage, grilled meat, black pepper and sweet tobac- co. On the palate this wine is very rich and full bodied. This shows mostly black fruit, dried herbs and BBQ spices. The finish on this sails on forever and only starts to taper off after 40 seconds. This is a Syrah to take and enjoy with your best friends or pair with your favorite meal. While this is great now it should slowly age and evolve into an even more amazing wine over the next 5 years.

Winery Notes:
It is funny, but “classic” and “perfect” are words bantered about a lot regarding this bountiful, beautiful vintage. To me it was “classic” growing conditions - early bud break, no frost damage, relatively dry spring, with less than an inch in April, then nothing till October, and less than an inch that final month of harvest. One heat spike in June, another in early October, but just beau- tiful otherwise, with very cool evenings and warm, idyllic days. It was a great year to be a farmer. A vintner had to beware, for after two very short crops in 2010 and 2011 - 2012 set a big crop that had to be thinned many times. By paying very close attention to the crop in each block, I can use the word, “perfect”. Man had to interfere to bring things into balance for what will easily be termed a great vintage.

Syrah
Also known as Shiraz in Australia and South Africa, Syrah makes intense, deep wines with plenty of spice, fruit and alcohol. It thrives in warm climates, and is widely grown in Australia, California, and the Rhone region of France, where it makes Cote Rotie and Hermitage, and forms the backbone of Chateauneuf du Pape. Region :
California
Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
