International Wine Report:
The 2012 Beckstoffer To Kalon Napa Valley red is simply stunning. This is composed of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Cabernet Franc which is a varietal that is scarce in To Kalon. As this begins to unwind in the glass it releases seductive aromas of blackberries, cassis, savory herbs, sweet spices, licorice and fresh minerals are all woven together in this dazzling red. On the palate this continues to impress, showing wonderful balance and finesse, nicely structured around beautifully polished tannins that take the wine into the long supple finish. This is a completely compelling wine and although it will only get better in time, it is impossible to resist today. (Best 2017-2035) (Drink 2014-2025).

An equal part blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 Proprietary Red Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard should turn out to be spectacular. Beautiful aromas of blueberries, black raspberries, bouquet garni, licorice and truffles soar from the glass of this inky purple-colored wine. Full-bodied as well as ethereal, it is a great example of how Cabernet Franc can add so much complexity and richness to a blend.

An amazing effort, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2012 Proprietary Red Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Cabernet Franc. It reveals the forest floor/floral character offered by Cabernet Franc along with black raspberries, blueberries and camphor. Relatively light on its feet, this is a sensational, complex red that should gain in nuance over the next 10-15 years.

Tor Kenward continues to turn out a portfolio of wines with sensational quality. The longtime public relations guy at Beringer, he has decades of experience with some of the finest winemakers and vineyard sites in Napa and Sonoma. That thorough knowledge and expertise is admirably displayed in the following wines. This may be his best overall performance to date, although his 2011s were very successful for the vintage, and he produced many great 2010s as well. I tasted three bottled 2012 and four 2013 Chardonnay barrel samples. Tor Kenward utilizes highly regarded vineyards generally planted with low-yielding Old Wente clones. Rumors have always suggested these clones came from Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy many decades ago. Tor has nailed the 2013 vintage as he has produced two wines that push perfection, and several others that merit scores in the high nineties. Kudos to Tor Kenward who is pushing the envelope in a dramatic and brilliant manner!

Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
