Antonio Galloni, Vinous
An utterly enticing, striking wine, the 2012 Chardonnay is captivating from the very first taste. Lemon oil, white flowers and mint are some of the signatures. The 2012 remains subtle and hushed in the glass, with striking interplay of fruit, acidity and bright saline notes. Above all else, the 2012 speaks to pure class. Once again, Mount Eden's Chardonnay stakes its claim as one of this country's oenological jewels. The 2012 appears to have a very bright future. Readers who can find it should not hesitate to pick it up....Mount Eden and its sister estate Domaine Eden remain surprisingly under the radar. Part of that is undoubtly a result of the decision to sell most of the production through distribution rather than direct to the consumer, where there is a greater opportunity to build a stronger bond and brand awareness with the end customer. What that means in practical terms is that these wines sell for far less than wines of similar quality from other parts of the US and around the world. The Mount Eden wines remain reference points for the Santa Cruz Mountains, while the Domaine Eden range is designed to deliver that pedigree at more accessible prices.
Wine Spectator
Highly Recommended - Taut and vibrant, the 2012 Chardonnay is one of this winery’s finest. The lifeblood of owners Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson, this tiny winery in Saratoga is one of California’s underappreciated treasures. Mount Eden is a labor of love, producing small amounts of Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Chardonnay comes from two shy-bearing parcels on the mountaintop, giving a mix of ripe and structured cuvées that spend a year in French oak and undergo full malolactic fermentation. The wines are styled to age for 10 years or longer.
Wine Spectator
Highly Recommended - Spicy, toasty, aromatic oak offers an enticing start, with a fresh, vibrant core of lemon-lime, lemon curd, white peach and stone fruit that is very tight, dense, focused and persistent. Ends with a juicy Key lime aftertaste. Drink now through 2029.

Additional Information

Varietal :
Probably the world's most famous grape, and also one of the most versatile, Chardonnay produces excellent white wines in a range of styles. When aged in oak, Chardonnay exhibits buttery, vanilla and sometimes nutty flavors. Unoaked examples are crisp and fruity, with green apple or tropical flavors. Chardonnay is the grape used to make White Burgundy, Sancerre and Chablis, and may also be used to produce Champagne. View all our additional Chardonnay items
Region :
Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
