Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Carlisle's 2012 Zinfandel is a stunning wine and a great value, to boot. Exuberant, juicy and ripe to the core, the 2012 is bursting with personality, intensity and pure pleasure. Close your eyes. Anywhere else in the world, this wine would sell for twice as much. Mike Officer and Jay Maddox have done a fabulous job here. Look at some of the vineyards in this blend; Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from Rossi Ranch, Zinfandel from Banfield Ranch, plus barrels of Zinfandel from Montafi and Sodini (which could have been bottled separately), all from sites planted between 1881 and 1910. Incredible.

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The least expensive offering is the gorgeous 2012 Zinfandel Sonoma, which comes from many different sources, but all are old vine Zinfandel and the so-called Mixed Black vineyards that were planted by Italian immigrants, usually in the late 1800s and early 1900s (prior to Prohibition). This is a 1,000-case cuvee whose vines were planted between 1881 and 1926. A dense ruby color is followed by copious aromas of brambleberries, black cherries, spice box and pepper. This pure, full-bodied (14.8% alcohol) Zinfandel hits the palate with loads of hedonistic joy.

Winery Notes
Winery Notes:
Medium-dark purple-ruby. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, orange rind, and spice. Full-bodied with flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, and a touch of loamy earth. Very harmonious on the palate with a caressing mouthfeel and subtle tannins on the finish. Mind blowing quality for price. Most wineries would charge double to triple what we are for a wine like this. Drink from release through 2021.

Winery Notes
Winery Notes:
First we blended Zinfandel from Rossi Ranch (planted 1910), Banfield Ranch (formerly known as Martinelli Road Vineyard, planted 1881), and Rowe Vineyard (planted 1906, just outside the northern boundary of Sonoma Valley). To add color and mid-palate volume, we added some young-vine Petite Sirah from Rossi Ranch and some old-vine Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, and Petit Bouschet from the Saitone Ranch (planted 1895). At this point, most wineries would have been thrilled with the result but we wanted more. Hence, we sacrificed four barrels of Montafi Ranch Zinfandel and two barrels of Sodini Vineyard Zinfandel to add texture and length to the wine. Mission accomplished! A spectacular unfined/unfiltered old-vine Zinfandel at a bargain of a price.

Additional Information

Varietal :
Zinfandel
Berrys and spice and everything nice – that's how Zinfandel fans describe wines made from this red wine grape. Often considered a cousin to the Italian Primitivo grape, it can be light and fruit like French Beaujolais, complex and age-worthy like Cabernet, or ripe, alcoholic and reminiscent of Port. Zinfandel is considered the All-American grape, likely because it is hardly found elsewhere… and possibly because it pairs so well with barbecue! View all our additional Zinfandel items

California
Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
