Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Another fabulous effort, the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is composed of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan that achieved 15.4% alcohol. One of my favorites in the tasting (although that’s splitting hairs), it exhibits a beautiful black fruit-scented nose with spice, pepper and a roasted meaty-like character. Dense, rich, full-bodied, beautifully balanced and impressively pure as well as layered, there are around 700 cases of this stunning Zinfandel made from vines planted in 1934. Consume it over the next 5-7 years.
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Carlisle Winery’s Mike Officer and his wife are one of the wonderful stories in the wine world. Going from a part-time home winemaker, to turning out some of his beloved Zinfandels, to becoming one of the two or three leading guardians of old vine Zinfandel in Northern California, Mike Officer was so good at making wine that he changed careers and wine consumers are the beneficiaries. The single vineyard Zins are absolutely remarkable. Everyone who loves Zinfandel should be on Carlisle’s mailing list, the wines are primarily available only from the winery.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous
A dollop of Carignane seems to give the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch gorgeous aromatic lift to play off the wine's deep layers of fruit. Silky tannins support sweet red fruit, flowers, spices and licorice in a sexy Zinfandel that should drink beautifully right out of the gate. The blend is 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignane.

Additional Information

Varietal :
Berrys and spice and everything nice – that's how Zinfandel fans describe wines made from this red wine grape. Often considered a cousin to the Italian Primitivo grape, it can be light and fruit like French Beaujolais, complex and age-worthy like Cabernet, or ripe, alcoholic and reminiscent of Port. Zinfandel is considered the All-American grape, likely because it is hardly found elsewhere… and possibly because it pairs so well with barbecue! View all our additional Zinfandel items
Sub-Region :
Russian River Valley

Within Sonoma County, there lies a valley with an incredibly rich history. The Russian River Valley derives its name from Russian settlers who moved to northern Sonoma Valley around 1812 to hunt sea otters for furs, as well as develop an agricultural foothold in order to send supplies to additional Russian settlers in Alaska. It did not take long for viticulture to follow, with vineyards being well established by the 1870's -- when The Santa Rosa Wine Company was opened for business -- making this valley one of the oldest wine producing regions in California. The region took a major hit in production during Prohibition, and many vineyards closed their doors and tore up their vines until the region saw a resurgence in growth in the 1960's.

Russian River Valley achieved American Viticultural Area status in 1983, and was enlarged in 2005. The region benefits from a cooler climate than most of Sonoma, and produces stellar, terroir driven wines with bright, focused fruit and a beautiful, silken texture. Russian River Valley's claim to fame lies with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, although some producers are seeing success with Syrah, Zinfandel, and Gewurtztraminer.

Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
