Alsace
On the west bank of the Upper Rhine bordering Germany and Switzerland, Alsace has been producing notable Riesling, Gewürztraminer and dessert wines since the days of the Roman Empire. Though the wine quality is consistent with other French wines, Alsace differs from other French wine regions in one obvious respect: Alsacian wines are not named after their appellation, but follow the German tradition of varietal naming. Alsacian whites tend are traditionally excellent food wines, due to their steely acidity and round fruit flavors.

France
Though French wines are the highest valued wines in the world, esteemed wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne were only enjoyed locally until 150 years ago when transportation improvements made them widely available. French wine production is governed by a strict quality-control system, which regulates the grapes used in each region and classifies wineries according to an elaborate cru hierarchy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc are just a few of the important grape varietals with roots in French soil.
