Winery Notes:
2006 Susan’s Vineyard Syrah,
The Susan’s Hill Vineyard, seemingly, can do no wrong. That may not be surprising once you learn that “Susan’s Hill” is simply the name for the Syrah section of the famed Pisoni Vineyard. Nonetheless, the consistent
success of Susan’s Syrahs from each producer is worthy of a story in and of itself.
We’ve been tweaking our production of Susan’s Hill Syrah each vintage. With the 2006 vintage we increased the percentage of whole cluster to 30%. We also bled off a bit of juice, about 5%, to further concentrate the wine and we used 38% new French oak on the wine. Ultimately it was bottled without fining or filtration in January of 2008.
The 2006 Novy Susan’s Hill Syrah shows blackberry and plum flavors, along with pepper and mineral undertones. It is a big concentrated wine made more complex with hints of dried herbs that originate with the whole cluster fermentation. The finish is tannic but not overly so. In a proper cellar, this wine should develop positively for many years to come.
