Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The star of this trio is the 2006 Pinot Noir Marcassin Estate, which represents a California version of a grand cru Clos de la Roche from the likes of Ponsot. A mulit-dimensional wine of exquisite intensity, it offers up notes of rose petals, wild strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. Its floral component, fabulous concentration, awesome texture, and expansive, broad mouthfeel make for a Pinot Noir bordering on perfection. While less evolved than the Three Sisters or Blue Slide Ridge, it is more evolved than most Marcassin Pinot Noirs are at age three. John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley served it next to a 2006 DRC La Tache, which was almost undrinkable (stemmy, metallic, frightfully tart because of green acid, and obviously made from underripe fruit), and was dwarfed by the prodigious Marcassin. It should drink well for 10-15+ years.

The 2006 Pinot Noir Marcassin Estate has also shut down considerably since last year. Even though it was decanted, it just began to reveal its ultimate potential. Notes of forest floor, plums, black cherries and raspberries intermixed with notions of blueberries and smoked meats are found in this dark plum/ruby/purple-tinged wine. Clos de la Roche-like, it exhibits sweet tannin and impressive depth, but as mentioned above, it has tightened up considerably over the last year and is probably best forgotten for another 1-2 years. It should provide immense pleasure over the following 10-15 years.

Sweet aromas of ripe cherries, black currants, plums, smoky barbecue, licorice and forest floor jump from the glass of this broad, savory, full-bodied, young, vibrant Pinot Noir. At age eight, it is just beginning to develop secondary nuances. It should continue to evolve for another decade, offering sumptuous drinking for at least 10-15 more years. This is another great success in a fabulous line-up.

Graceful, elegant and stylish, offering a pleasant touch of maturity, with a complex array of anise, cherry, raspberry, red licorice and fresh porcini flavors leading to a medium body. Shows the benefits of cellaring. Drink now through 2018.

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a versatile red wine grape used to make some of the world's greatest wines. Depending on where it is grown, Pinot Noir can be earthy or fruity, light-bodied or heavy, pale garnet or deep red. In France, Pinot Noir produces fine red Burgundy and is one of the three grapes used in Champagne (the skins are removed prior to fermentation to produce blanc de noir or "white from red.") It is also considered the most diverse, food-friendly wine View all our additional Pinot Noir items
