Merlot
While California wine drinkers know Merlot as a stand-alone red wine varietal, French winemakers blend it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and others to produce distinct Bordeaux blends like the famous wines from Chateau Petrus. It shares herbal and black fruit characteristics with Cabernet Sauvignon, but is smoother, lighter bodied and less tannic.

More than twice the size of neighboring Napa, Sonoma County overflows with wineries and grape varieties. Within this appellation’s one million total acres--which include the Sonoma coast, mountains, valley, and Northern Sonoma--over 190 wineries make their home. Nearly every grape variety grown in California can be found in Sonoma County. Diverse climate, soils and geography make this AVA a patchwork of sub regions, including Dry Creek Valley, Chalk Hill, Russian River Valley and Los Carneros.

Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc.
