Connoisseurs' Guide
Both of the DuMol entries make no bones about their ripeness, but this one, despite being the higher in stated alcohol, is by far the more mannerly, and it is the wine's concentrated yet tightly controlled styling that makes it the highest rated Syrah amongst a pretty good set of wines. Its keenly focused blackberry aromas are joined by distinct varietal spice notes along with suggestions of pepper and game. It is wonderfully well-balanced and supple, convincingly deep and layered flavors that go on and on even in the face of youthful tannin.

Muscular, floral, and primordial is the broodingly black/purple-colored 2004 Syrah Eddie’s Patch. Deep, concentrated, and impressively endowed, with full-bodied power and unctuosity, it should be consumed over the next 7-8 years.
Kudos to DuMol, one of the brilliant shining stars of the North Coast Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah sweepstakes.

The 2004 Syrah Eddie’s Patch (400 cases) shares an opaque purple color in addition to notes of incense, blackberries, truffles, and spicy wood. It is a huge, dense, cool climate Syrah with a Pinot Noir-like sassafras character. Drink this big, earthy, terroir-driven effort over the next 10-12 years.
As I said last year, DuMol is one of my favorite wineries, primarily because of the passion and commitment to quality of owner Kerry Murphy and his winemaker, Andy Smith.
