Reviewer, Pierre Rovani - The raspberry, orange blossom, and cherry-scented 1999 #4 Muskat Ottonel Zwischen Den Seen Trockenbeerenauslese is a thick, unctuous tangerine-flavored fruit bomb. Its oily character slathers the palate with jellied kumquats, mandarins, and tangerines, all of whose flavors linger throughout its marvelously extensive finish. AustriaWith 70% of Austria’s vineyards planted with white grape varietals, it is no wonder that Austrian wines have become synonymous with dry to sweet whites. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are just a few of the varietals that thrive in Austria’s cool climate. The Alps, foggy valleys, rolling hillsides, rocky soil – Austria is a variable landscape suited to more than 30 “approved” varieties. Producers like Hirtzberger, Schloss Gobelsburg and Bründlmayer make excellent dry examples, while delicious German-style sweet wines - Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein – come from Alois Kracher and Willi Opitz. |
