Saturated ruby-red. Multidimensional nose offers a panoply of scents: black plum, currant, leather, smoked meat, cigar ash, lead pencil, sandalwood, dark chocolate, licorice, brown sugar. Very bright and sharply defined; flavors of plum, leather, hot stones and lead pencil. An impeccably balanced wine of compelling sweetness, but rather dominated today by its structure. Strong, thoroughly ripe tannins spread out to coat the entire palate. Very long and subtle.

The 1997 Dominus Napanook Vineyard possesses a broad, dense personality, lots of volume, and a long, fat, rich mid-palate and finish. The alcohol is listed at 14.1%, and the finish pH is high (3.95), which makes the wine charming, fleshy, and silky-textured. I do not know how he does it, but Christian Moueix is able to make Cabernet Sauvignon from the southern Napa Valley taste like a terrific Pomerol. The 1997 possesses considerable quantities of glycerin, terrific fruit purity, and gobs of black cherry and cassis flavors intermixed with licorice, coffee, and Asian spice notes. It is a stunning Dominus that will be drinkable when released, and will age well for 15-20 years.

The 1997 Dominus, a blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4.5% Merlot, is showing fabulously well. With 14.1% alcohol and a pH that would make many New World oenologists shudder (about 3.95), this wine is a fleshy, silky-textured, opulent wine with a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, coffee, jammy black cherry and plum-like fruit. Asian spice, licorice, and blackberry and cherry notes with tobacco spice all add to this complex, very involved, yet gorgeously symmetrical Dominus. The wine is medium to full-bodied, very concentrated, and silky-textured. It is gorgeous to drink now, but should age easily for 10-15 years.

Additional Information

Sub-Region :
Napa Valley
America’s equivalent of Bordeaux, Napa Valley is the most famous winegrowing region in the United States. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay reign supreme in Napa Valley, but many of varietals are also grown successfully. Wines made from Napa Valley grapes vary greatly depending on the specific AVA or sub region where they are grown. Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Stag’s Leap, Oakville and Rutherford are a few acclaimed sub regions with their own distinct climactic and soil conditions. It is also the home of California “cult wines” like Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate and Grace Family Vineyard. View all our items from Napa Valley
Region :
California
Since the famous Judgement of Paris in 1976 California wines have unquestionably ranked among the best in the world. From the Anderson Valley in the North through Temecula Valley in the South, California vineyards grow dozens of wine grape varietals that produce wines of many different styles. The California wine industry has steadily gained ground since the 1960s (the industry took a major hit following Prohibition), but its roots date back over 200 years. Major grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. View all our items from California
