PortugalThe coastal country of Portugal is best known for its fortified wines, Port and Madeira. Port is so-named for Oporto, the coastal town where it is produced, not as a reference to the country name. Present-day Portuguese wine production began in the 15th century, with fortification of local wines beginning in the 18th century.
